Summer Skin Care Tips

Organic Skin CareJessica AndersonComment

In beautiful Fort Collins, we get around 300 days of sunshine each year. But whether you are in
Colorado like this natural skin care company or somewhere else in the U.S. or around the world,
we wanted to bring you some summer skin care tips so you can keep your skin looking its best
this summer.

Wear SunScreen
Yes, we know this isn’t a ground-breaking tip. But we wanted to let you know about a couple of our favorite sunscreens. We don’t make them - but we love them so much we wanted to make sure you knew about them too! Raw Elements 30 SPF sunscreen is reef-safe and biodegradable - so you don’t have to worry about leaving chemicals behind if you go for a swim in the lake or tube down the river. The all-natural formula is great for sensitive skin too. Juice Beauty's Sport Sunscreen is an SPF 30 water-proof blend that smells amazing and spreads easily.

Wear Foundation or Daily Moisturizer with SPF
You may not think to put sunscreen on your face every time you head outside but more often
than not you will probably be putting on your makeup. That is why we recommend a natural
foundation or moisturizer with SPF so you are protected all the time. We personally love Juice
Beauty products like their Stem Cellular Color Correcting Cream with SPF 30.

Schedule a Skin Check with Your Dermatologist
If you have a family history of skin cancer or you have noticed some new spots on your skin, it
never hurts to schedule a skin check with your dermatologist. It’s good to do a skin check once
a year if you are predisposed to skin cancer.

Heading into the summer months, make sure you are stocked up on a natural sunscreen, a daily
moisturizer or foundation with SPF, and schedule a visit with your dermatologist if you have any concerns. And please contact us at SkinDeep Naturals if you want to know more about any of our natural skin care products.

A Peek at the Complexities of Sunscreen

Health & WellnessJessica AndersonComment

If you spend any time on social media or watching the news, you’ve probably heard the latest
sunscreen news; “Baby Get Face Burned Off by Sunscreen”, “Sunscreen Now Causes More
Cancer Than the Sun Itself”, and so on. But it can be hard to know among all the fear-
mongering articles what the truth is about sunscreen. Although we have touched on sunscreen
before on this Northern Colorado natural skincare blog, we want to dig a little deeper into the
great sunscreen debate and throw in our two cents as well.

Why Wear It?
If you have fair skin, you already know sunscreen helps you avoid painful sunburns and
blisters. And it is widely believed sunscreen helps prevent skin cancer, even for those with dark
pigmented skin. The Skin Cancer Foundation reports a study from Australia showing those who
regularly applied sunscreen to their face, neck, arms, and hands were 50% less likely to have a
melanoma. If sunscreen is so vital to preventing skin cancer, where are we going wrong?

What are the Concerns with Wearing Sunscreen?
The Environmental Working Group points out sunscreen is a very complicated substance. It
must be strong enough to fight off the sun’s rays while being gentle enough to not cause rashes or irritations. It needs to bond with skin so it doesn’t rinse right off - but it needs to be non-toxic in case of absorption, or accidental consumption or inhalation.

The active ingredients in sunscreens are either mineral or chemical. Many of the common
chemical ingredients are oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and
octinoxate and usually there is a combination of at least two of these ingredients. Common
mineral sunscreens are zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide.

One of the main concerns raised by the EWG and many others is that 16 of the 19 FDA-
approved chemical active ingredients in sunscreen have no documented tests on if these
chemicals themselves cause cancer. Other concerns include skin allergies, rashes, and
unwanted hormonal effects.

Conflicting Stories
While the Skin Cancer Foundation publishes articles like this, advocating that sunscreen does
not cause skin cancer and that everyone ought to wear sunscreen to avoid development of
cancerous and pre-cancerous cells, other sources post articles saying quite the contrary. Online
sources like The Truth About Cancer maintain sunscreen is not safe and should be avoided,
even providing recipes for homemade sunscreen that is safe with ingredients like cocoa butter
and vitamin E.

Other sources seek to explain the problems we are seeing. For example, if you have seen the
viral story going around on social media about the baby who had a sever burn from Banana
Boat sunscreen, WebMD explains it was probably a photo-allergy. This photo-allergy was an
allergic reaction caused by the interaction between the sun, the product, and an allergy the
young girl had to one of the ingredients. Dr. Alok Vij from the Cleveland Clinic explains:

“It’s not very common, but sunscreens are a common cause of that [photoallergic] reaction.
The thing that makes it harder to diagnose is that there are a lot of potential allergens in the
chemical sunscreens. Fragrances, preservatives -- a lot of ingredients that sunscreen companies use to make them spread more easily, absorb more quickly, essentially make them more elegant to put on the skin.”

Where Does That Leave Us?
Our opinion here at SkinDeep Naturals is always that a more natural product is better. Is it
possible for you to use chemical sunscreen your whole life and never have a bad allergic
reaction or have it lead to skin cancer? Maybe so. But will you have more peace of mind and
potentially healthier body systems using products that have natural ingredients? We tend to
lean in this direction.

When it comes to you and your family’s health, we think it’s best to go with your gut and of
course ask a medical provider you trust if you have questions. And if you are looking for a
natural sunscreen, we love Raw Elements Sunscreen and SPF 30 Sport Sunscreen by Juice Beauty.

Winter Skin Hacks

Organic Skin CareJessica AndersonComment

If you’re like us at SkinDeep Naturals, winter means dry air and dry skin. You might be running the humidifier day and night and slathering on the lotion, but your skin is still red and cracking. Since this Fort Collins natural skin care company is nestled right along the edge of the Rocky Mountains, we have learned a thing or two about protecting skin in the winter.

Here are 3 winter skin hacks to help you survive until the moisture comes back.

1) Try to use lukewarm water. Yes, we know - we want to jump in a hot bath as much as you do in the winter to warm our bones. But sadly, hot baths, showers, and washing your hands and face in hot water further strips your skin of the oils you so desperately need. When you can handle it, try to make the water less hot. Your skin will thank you.

2) Choose natural lotion. While you may already be using lotion, read the labels carefully. Many lotions from the drug store are petroleum-based, meaning they will dry your skin out more. Even lotions labeled as "natural" have drying ingredients that in no way nourish your skin. Read the ingredients label to make sure you know what you are putting on your skin. Because what goes onto your skin also enters your bloodstream! Check out the various moisturizers we offer at SkinDeep Naturals. Natural ingredients like jojoba oil, organic plant hydrosols, beeswax, coconut oil, and organic essential oils are easier for your skin to soak up and use.

3) Protect your skin when out in the elements. Wearing gloves and scarves over exposed skin can help protect your skin from the wind and cold. Often, our hands bear the brunt of dry skin troubles - so gloves will help your hands especially.

Hopefully implementing a few of these tips will help you get through the next few months of
cold weather. If you live in a cold weather climate like we do - what are your winter hacks for skin trouble? We’d love to hear from you! Contact us today at SkinDeep Naturals.

What You Need to Know About Skin Types

Organic Skin CareJessica AndersonComment

Just like every person is unique, everyone has unique skin. People have different sensitivities, water content, and lipid or oil content in their skin. These factors affect which products you should use on your skin and different elements to add to your skin care regimen. It’s also important to note that skin type can change over time - so listen to your body and change your skin care regimen as needed. These are the 5 main skin types and a few tips for caring for them, according to WebMD.

Normal: Normal skin doesn’t have any sensitivities and very few blemishes. This is a result of the right balance of lipids and water. An important note here is that normal skin doesn't mean "do nothing" skin. The more preventative approach you take at this stage, the better off your skin's health will be in the long run. A regular 3-step cleansing system and use of sunscreen when spending time in the sun are key. Prevent sun damage, prevent dehydration, and prevent clogged pores so that your skin ages well.

Dry: Dry skin has less elasticity, more visible lines, red patches, and a dull complexion. Ways to help dry skin are avoiding long, hot showers, avoiding harsh soaps and cosmetics, and using a rich moisturizer right after bathing, while skin is still damp. This combination of water and lipids mimics and nourishes the skin's acid mantle barrier. Check out our Rosewater Hydrating Mist and Total Nourish Facial Serum for dry skin.

Oily: Oily skin is common during adolescence and is characterized by an oily complexion, visible pores, and black heads. Treat oily skin by limiting washing the face to two times a day and using products labeled for oily skin. Avoid aggressive popping and squeezing blemishes since that can lead to scaring. Instead, try giving yourself an at-home skin care treatment so that pores can be properly extracted.

Combination: Combination skin is just as it sounds, perhaps dry or normal in places and oily in others, especially along the t-zone. If you have questions about which products are right for your combination skin, please contact us.

Sensitive: Sensitive skin is characterized by redness, itching, or dryness. Natural skin care products are a great choice for sensitive skin because there aren’t any chemicals or unnatural fragrances or coloring to aggravate skin.

If you have a difficult time discerning which products to use with your skin type, contact us at SkinDeep Naturals. We would love to set you up with products that are going to make your complexion glow.

Treat Yourself to an At-Home Facial

Organic Skin CareJessica AndersonComment

Facials shouldn't be considered a luxury - but an important ritual of self-care. Keep reading for steps on how to treat your skin to an effective spa-like treatment in the comfort of your home!

Step One - Remove makeup with Coconut Dream Cleanser:

Coconut Dream Cleanser

Rub a dime size amount of Coconut Dream between palms to melt, gently press and massage over face and neck to dissolve makeup and impurities. Wipe with warm wet cloth.

Step Two - Steam skin to soften dead skin cells and remove any residual makeup:

Organic Cotton Compress

Fill a basin with very warm water, add 10-15 drops of your favorite essential oil, immerse an organic cotton cleansing cloth and swish around a bit. Squeeze some of the excess water out (but not too much) and apply to face until the cloth cools off. Repeat 3 - 5 times, re-heating water if it cools off.
*Use organic lavender essential oil as a soothing compress - good for all skin types.
*Use organic citrus essential oils as a wake-up compress - good for normal, oily, or combination skin types.
*Use organic tea tree essential oil as a purifying compress for skin prone to acne breakouts.

Step Three - Slough off dead skin cells with Daily Exfoliating Cleanser:

Daily Exfoliating Cleanser

Scoop a small amount of scrub with clean fingers, smooth it on to wet hands, rub together a couple of times to get a nice lather, gently press and massage into face and neck. Pay special attention to areas where pores are enlarged or visibly clogged. Rinse with warm water.

Now is the time to perform extractions if needed, while the skin is still warm and pores are open. Gently apply pressure to the area surrounding the clogged pore or pimple to try and release any pore debris. Don't be forceful - if the pore does not empty with ease, try a few more warm compresses with essential oil to further soften the debris and open the pore.

Step Four - Mist skin with the appropriate toner for your skin type:

Toner

Applying toner is an important step in the process. Our toners provide different levels of astringent properties, close pores after cleansing, and our Hydrating Mists provide beneficial moisture. All of our toners assist in the distribution and absorption of our hydrating facial serums.

For normal to dry skin: Rosewater Hydrating Mist or Cucumber Hydrating Mist. For skin prone to breakouts: Blemish Control Toner.

Step Five - Finish with 2 - 3 pumps of hydrating serum:

Hydrating Serum

While skin is still wet from toning mist, apply several pumps of serum to hands, rub together and press and smooth over face, neck and chest. Use Total Nourish Serum for normal to dry skin - and for skin prone to breakouts, use Blemish Control Serum.

*Always combine treatment serum with toner. This combination of floral water and lipids mimics and nourishes the skin's acid mantle barrier.

I recommend this type of skin treatment at least once a month - more often if time allows! Please contact me with any questions or feedback.

New Year, New Wellness Resolutions

Organic Skin Care, Health & Wellness, Home, FamilyJessica AndersonComment

As we head into 2018, you will probably set about making some New Year’s resolutions. At SkinDeep Naturals we want to encourage you to look at living more cleanly in 2018. This can mean different things for different people.

Maybe you have never been very conscious of the food you buy, the products you put on your skin, or the clothes you wear. Maybe you are very conscious of some of these things but not others. Or perhaps you are very aware of each of these things. Regardless, we want to give you some ideas for New Year’s resolutions that will lead to a healthier lifestyle for you and your family.

Food: You may not be able to shop all organic, non-GMO, and free range. But looking at your labels and making some conscious decisions about the food you eat is a great place to start. Consider joining a produce co-op like Bountiful Baskets if there is one near you. If you eat meat, buying a half or quarter of a cow is a great way to make sure you are eating meat all year that you know came from a good source at a reasonable price too.

Cosmetics/ Skin Care: If you are shopping at SkinDeep Naturals, you are probably already someone who is conscious about using natural skin care products. When you get your products from us, you know they are free from harmful parabens, fragrances, and coloring. But if you are shopping for items at the drug store, check your labels. Choose options that say “paraben free”, “fragrance free” and so on.

Clothing: Clothing is a tough one for many people because of the expense. But adding more organic cotton clothing to your wardrobe is always a good idea. If you want to learn more about organic cotton, check out this article. Another more affordable option to reduce your environmental footprint (although it doesn’t address allergy issues) is shopping at consignment shops.

We understand that we can’t each do all of these things overnight. But consider taking a few small steps towards some of these cleaner ways of living as you plot out your resolutions this year. For more information on Northern Colorado natural skin care, contact us today at SkinDeep Naturals.

Treat Yourself—How Using a Cleansing Mask Beautifies Skin

Family, Health & Wellness, Home, Organic Skin CareJessica AndersonComment

Perhaps you have memories of doing masks at sleepovers in high school or smearing mashed up avocado on your face in college. But masks aren’t just for sleepovers or from scenes in chick flicks. Masks are an important part of a healthy skin care regimen. At SkinDeep Naturals, a Fort Collins and Loveland natural skin care provider, we create a wonderful cleansing clay mask. And we have even shared some of our favorite DIY masks to make at home in a previous blog post.

Why use a mask, and how it is different than a daily cleanser?

A daily cleanser is meant to remove  make up and oils from the day, provide light exfoliation, and leave your skin feeling clean and fresh. A mask is used less frequently and works deeper to unclog pores, drawing out impurities, and decreasing the appearance of blemishes and wrinkles. With our Cleansing Clay Mask, we recommend using it one to three times a week to prevent breakouts and leave your skin glowing.

Cleansing Clay Mask—Purify and Detoxify

The ingredients we use in our mask are especially picked to help you have the healthiest skin. The clay has a high mineral content that stimulates blood circulation and exfoliates. Vegetable glycerin locks healthy moisture into the skin while helping clear our impurities. Our mask restores your skin with Omega 3,6,7, and 9 in the sea buckthorn oil. Plantain leaves speed up the recovery of damaged skin.

Use this mask by mixing a teaspoon of the mask with ½ teaspoon of water, mixing into a paste in the palm of your hand, and rubbing the paste on your face, neck, chest, or back. Steam from a warm bath while you allow the mask to sit on your skin will only increase the benefits by opening your pores. After five to ten minutes use a warm cloth to remove the mask. You can mist before, during, and after this process with our Hydrating Cucumber Mist as well.

We hope you take a few moments soon to treat yourself with a mask. And for more information about masks or natural skin care in general, contact us today at SkinDeep Naturals.

A SkinDeep Naturals Story

Organic Skin CareJessica AndersonComment

If you already use our Northern Colorado natural skin care products, you might know a little bit
about us. But in this blog post, we wanted to let you know more about our passion and our
story.

SkinDeep Naturals is the invention and passion of Jessica Anderson—a mother, wife, and
entrepreneur in Loveland, Colorado. Jessica worked as an esthetician while putting herself
through college and fell in love with an Ayurveda skin care line used at her day spa. Later, while
working in the I.T. industry and staying home as a mom, Jessica found her friends and family
often approached her with questions about skin care because of her history of working as an
esthetician.

In 2008, Jessica decided to put her training and passion together to create a line of natural skin care products for the whole family—SkinDeep Naturals. She opened an Etsy store and then
became both an online retailer while several local shops began selling some SkinDeep products in-store.

At SkinDeep Naturals, we value using truly natural ingredients to create products that alleviate
common skin issues like teen acne, adult acne, premature aging, rosacea, and dry skin. We
want to make our products accessible and affordable. Each product is made-to- order, meaning it is created in small batches and doesn’t sit on the shelf for months until it gets purchased. In Colorado, people tend to value what is healthy and natural. We want to spread our product to others throughout the country and the world who appreciate natural products and taking care of themselves and the Earth. For more information on our products or what we believe at SkinDeep Naturals, contact us today.

Product Highlight—Daily Exfoliating Cleanser and Refill

Product HighlightsJessica AndersonComment

If you don’t already enjoy the daily routine of washing your face at night, now is a great time to try it. Along with brushing your teeth and your other bedtime rituals, washing your face is a relaxing way to take the day off. SkinDeep Naturals has a Daily Exfoliating Cleanser that is perfect for removing the dirt from the day as well as makeup and dead skin.

This Northern Colorado skin care product is made from all-natural ingredients like organic rice flour, sugar, organic olive oil, and organic essential oils. It also contains jojoba oil and vitamin e to rejuvenate your skin. Unlike some scrubs on the market, this sugar scrub is gentle enough for everyday use but still smooths out the appearance of wrinkles and lines.

Something remarkable about our cleanser that shows our attention to the environment is that we sell refills in disposable packages that lessen your environmental impact as you reuse your existing glass jar. We recommend running the jar through the dishwasher and then letting it dry all the way. Then with some rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball, wipe out the inside of the jar and let it air dry. This ensures the jar is sterilized and you can add your refill from the pouch. This refill process saves you a few dollars and allows you to reuse!

Our Daily Exfoliating Cleanser is best followed by our Organic Cucumber Hydrating Mist and Facial Serum. For more information about our natural skin care products, contact us today at SkinDeep Naturals.

3 Home-Made Mask Recipes to Pamper Yourself

Organic Skin CareJessica AndersonComment

You don’t have to go to a spa to do a little pampering. Plan a spa night at home with some good friends and make a few of these home-made facial masks. All you will need are a few ingredients that you probably already have on hand and maybe a bottle of wine and some healthy snacks!

Kefir is one of my favorite DIY facial ingredients due to its beneficial bacteria and naturally occurring Alpha-Hydroxy Acid. AHA’s are great for your skin because they rid the skin of dead surface cells and stimulate the production of collagen. If you aren’t already making your own kefir at home, you should consider it. It is very simple to do and only takes minutes a day. Use what you need for your daily probiotic intake, and save the rest for your skin care routine! You can find more information on how to get started making your own kefir here.

For Normal Skin:

Blend together 1/2 banana, 2 TBS of kefir, and 1 TBS of honey. Apply to the face, neck, and chest area and let set for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water and a cloth. Bananas are incredibly nourishing for your skin and honey works as a natural humectant. No need to moisturize after this treatment, your skin will be incredibly soft and hydrated!

For Oily/Acne Skin:

Whip together 2 TBS of kefir, 1 egg white, and 1 tsp of lemon juice. Apply evenly to the face, neck, chest, and/or back area and let set for 5-20 minutes. Rinse with warm water and a cloth. Follow with 1 pump of Blemish Control Serum combined with 2 pumps of Organic Cucumber Hydrating Mist or Blemish Control Toner. Repeat this mask every 2-3 days to clear up acne breakouts.

For Dry Skin:

Combine 1/2 ripe avocado, 1 TBS of kefir, and 1 TBS of honey until blended well. Apply to the face, neck, and chest. Make sure you massage it in very well. Let it set for 20 minutes and then rinse with warm water and a cloth. Follow up with a few mists of Organic Rosewater Hydrating Mist. Use the other half of your avocado for a delicious serving of avocado toast!

We hope you love these recipes and have a little rest and relaxation time as you try them out. Contact us today at SkinDeep Naturals for more natural skin care solutions.
