A Peek at the Complexities of Sunscreen

Health & WellnessJessica AndersonComment

If you spend any time on social media or watching the news, you’ve probably heard the latest
sunscreen news; “Baby Get Face Burned Off by Sunscreen”, “Sunscreen Now Causes More
Cancer Than the Sun Itself”, and so on. But it can be hard to know among all the fear-
mongering articles what the truth is about sunscreen. Although we have touched on sunscreen
before on this Northern Colorado natural skincare blog, we want to dig a little deeper into the
great sunscreen debate and throw in our two cents as well.

Why Wear It?
If you have fair skin, you already know sunscreen helps you avoid painful sunburns and
blisters. And it is widely believed sunscreen helps prevent skin cancer, even for those with dark
pigmented skin. The Skin Cancer Foundation reports a study from Australia showing those who
regularly applied sunscreen to their face, neck, arms, and hands were 50% less likely to have a
melanoma. If sunscreen is so vital to preventing skin cancer, where are we going wrong?

What are the Concerns with Wearing Sunscreen?
The Environmental Working Group points out sunscreen is a very complicated substance. It
must be strong enough to fight off the sun’s rays while being gentle enough to not cause rashes or irritations. It needs to bond with skin so it doesn’t rinse right off - but it needs to be non-toxic in case of absorption, or accidental consumption or inhalation.

The active ingredients in sunscreens are either mineral or chemical. Many of the common
chemical ingredients are oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and
octinoxate and usually there is a combination of at least two of these ingredients. Common
mineral sunscreens are zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide.

One of the main concerns raised by the EWG and many others is that 16 of the 19 FDA-
approved chemical active ingredients in sunscreen have no documented tests on if these
chemicals themselves cause cancer. Other concerns include skin allergies, rashes, and
unwanted hormonal effects.

Conflicting Stories
While the Skin Cancer Foundation publishes articles like this, advocating that sunscreen does
not cause skin cancer and that everyone ought to wear sunscreen to avoid development of
cancerous and pre-cancerous cells, other sources post articles saying quite the contrary. Online
sources like The Truth About Cancer maintain sunscreen is not safe and should be avoided,
even providing recipes for homemade sunscreen that is safe with ingredients like cocoa butter
and vitamin E.

Other sources seek to explain the problems we are seeing. For example, if you have seen the
viral story going around on social media about the baby who had a sever burn from Banana
Boat sunscreen, WebMD explains it was probably a photo-allergy. This photo-allergy was an
allergic reaction caused by the interaction between the sun, the product, and an allergy the
young girl had to one of the ingredients. Dr. Alok Vij from the Cleveland Clinic explains:

“It’s not very common, but sunscreens are a common cause of that [photoallergic] reaction.
The thing that makes it harder to diagnose is that there are a lot of potential allergens in the
chemical sunscreens. Fragrances, preservatives -- a lot of ingredients that sunscreen companies use to make them spread more easily, absorb more quickly, essentially make them more elegant to put on the skin.”

Where Does That Leave Us?
Our opinion here at SkinDeep Naturals is always that a more natural product is better. Is it
possible for you to use chemical sunscreen your whole life and never have a bad allergic
reaction or have it lead to skin cancer? Maybe so. But will you have more peace of mind and
potentially healthier body systems using products that have natural ingredients? We tend to
lean in this direction.

When it comes to you and your family’s health, we think it’s best to go with your gut and of
course ask a medical provider you trust if you have questions. And if you are looking for a
natural sunscreen, we love Raw Elements Sunscreen and SPF 30 Sport Sunscreen by Juice Beauty.

3 Plants to Put in Your Garden That Have Medicinal Uses

Home, FamilyJessica AndersonComment

Spring is here -  and it’s time to start thinking about what we will plant in your garden this year. Whether you have a window box, a raised bed, or a large garden at your home, you can enjoy watching a little green sprout in your home and yard too. In this post, we wanted to look at 3 herbs you can plant that have medicinal uses to aid in your natural living.

1) Basil: According to this article from Reader’s Digest, basil has many medicinal uses. It
helps with flatulence, lack of appetite, and can be placed on cuts and scrapes. Basil even
has antibacterial properties and can help prevent infection on a cut. To read more about
the medicinal uses of basil, check out this article from Off the Grid News.

2) Chamomile: You’ve probably heard of chamomile tea, but did you know that you can grow the flowers yourself to help with anxiety, calm digestive issues, and even soothe newborn baby colic? Lots of parents swear by chamomile tea on The Baby Center - as long as the chamomile tea is given at a lukewarm temperature and in small doses.

3) Lemon Balm: Lemon balm is like peppermint and helps with digestion, anxiety, insomnia, and wound care. Lemon balm has been used since the Middle Ages for its medicinal properties. Use it in a tea or in cooking. Read about nine of its health benefits here.

These are just a few plants you can plan to put in your garden to use for daily maladies. For more examples of herbs you can easily grow and use at home, click here. For more about natural living and natural remedies, contact us today at SkinDeep Naturals.

At-Home Spa

Natural Spring Cleaning Tips

HomeJessica AndersonComment

Spring is so close we can almost taste it - and that means at this Fort Collins natural skin care
company
, we’ve got the itch for spring cleaning. If you don’t already have a go-to plan for
spring cleaning, we wanted to get you started with four spring cleaning tips so your home feels
fresh and as ready for the new season as you are. When applicable, we have included our
favorite natural cleaners and tools in lieu of chemical cleaners.

*  Clean with Vinegar: If you don’t mind the smell, vinegar can replace many store-bought
cleaners you use in your home. You can mix equal parts vinegar and water in a spray
bottle to clean windows, stainless steel, and get buildup off faucets. Check out this
article
from Today to read about 28 uses for vinegar.

*  Clean with Hydrogen Peroxide: Hydrogen peroxide is another item you probably have
at home that is great for natural cleaning. It is perfect for removing stains from clothes
(especially blood and dark stains from berries). And it is used as a disinfectant (while
vinegar is not a registered disinfectant) so it can clean areas more prone to gathering
bacteria like counter tops and sinks.

*  Refresh Drapes in the Dryer: An article from HGTV recommends refreshing drapes by
throwing them in the dryer with a wet towel on an air-fluff cycle for 15 minutes. The
wet towel will draw away the dust and you will have fresh drapes to hang back up. Add a few drops of lavender essential oil to a few wool dryer balls to add a refreshing scent!

*  Don’t Underestimate the Power of Fresh Air: For large or bulky items that might not
need to be washed (like pillows and comforters), you can air them off on a clothes line
outside to remove the stale smell on being in a closed-up house all winter.

At SkinDeep Naturals we are always looking for simple ways to make our lives more natural.
What are your favorite natural cleaning tips? We’d love to hear from you. Contact us today for

DIY Herb Garden for Your Kitchen

HomeJessica AndersonComment

Here at SkinDeep Naturals, your go-to for Northern Colorado natural skin care products, we are all about natural living. So today in the blog we wanted to share with you a DIY project to create an herb garden for your kitchen. That way you can grow your own organic herbs for cooking, mixing cocktails, and wellness remedies.

To begin, you must decide if you want to do a DIY project. If not, there is no shame! We found this very cute and functional set up that would be perfect for herbs at Ikea. You can use a FINTORP rail, the FINTORP hooks, and a few FINTORP utensil holders to plant your favorite herbs to get a similar set up to the one we are about to describe.

What You Need:

A wooden board (for the best effect, up-cycle something you’ve found)

Pipe clamps

Nails

Mason jars

Triangle ring hangers

Hanging wire

Chalk paint (optional)

Chalk (optional)

Potting Soil

Herbs (oregano, cilantro, chives, basil, rosemary, etc.)

What to Do:

1) Space the jars out evenly on the board (with the board either vertical or horizontal). Use a pencil to mark where you want the jars.

2) Nail the pipe clamps to the board where you want the jars.

3) On the back of the board, nail in the ring hangers and tie the wire between them.

4) Plant your choice of herbs in the mason jars and place in the pipe clamps.

5) Use a screw driver to tighten down the pipe clamps.

6) If desired, paint sections of chalk paint near each jar and write the names of the herbs with chalk.

7) Hang your crafty herb display in your kitchen, ready to enjoy the next time you cook!

We got our inspiration for this project from Camille Styles but there are many other varieties you can find on Pinterest if you want more detailed descriptions or another look to match your kitchen. To find out more about who we are and what we care about at SkinDeep Naturals, contact us today.

New Year, New Wellness Resolutions

Organic Skin Care, Health & Wellness, Home, FamilyJessica AndersonComment

As we head into 2018, you will probably set about making some New Year’s resolutions. At SkinDeep Naturals we want to encourage you to look at living more cleanly in 2018. This can mean different things for different people.

Maybe you have never been very conscious of the food you buy, the products you put on your skin, or the clothes you wear. Maybe you are very conscious of some of these things but not others. Or perhaps you are very aware of each of these things. Regardless, we want to give you some ideas for New Year’s resolutions that will lead to a healthier lifestyle for you and your family.

Food: You may not be able to shop all organic, non-GMO, and free range. But looking at your labels and making some conscious decisions about the food you eat is a great place to start. Consider joining a produce co-op like Bountiful Baskets if there is one near you. If you eat meat, buying a half or quarter of a cow is a great way to make sure you are eating meat all year that you know came from a good source at a reasonable price too.

Cosmetics/ Skin Care: If you are shopping at SkinDeep Naturals, you are probably already someone who is conscious about using natural skin care products. When you get your products from us, you know they are free from harmful parabens, fragrances, and coloring. But if you are shopping for items at the drug store, check your labels. Choose options that say “paraben free”, “fragrance free” and so on.

Clothing: Clothing is a tough one for many people because of the expense. But adding more organic cotton clothing to your wardrobe is always a good idea. If you want to learn more about organic cotton, check out this article. Another more affordable option to reduce your environmental footprint (although it doesn’t address allergy issues) is shopping at consignment shops.

We understand that we can’t each do all of these things overnight. But consider taking a few small steps towards some of these cleaner ways of living as you plot out your resolutions this year. For more information on Northern Colorado natural skin care, contact us today at SkinDeep Naturals.

Treat Yourself—How Using a Cleansing Mask Beautifies Skin

Family, Health & Wellness, Home, Organic Skin CareJessica AndersonComment

Perhaps you have memories of doing masks at sleepovers in high school or smearing mashed up avocado on your face in college. But masks aren’t just for sleepovers or from scenes in chick flicks. Masks are an important part of a healthy skin care regimen. At SkinDeep Naturals, a Fort Collins and Loveland natural skin care provider, we create a wonderful cleansing clay mask. And we have even shared some of our favorite DIY masks to make at home in a previous blog post.

Why use a mask, and how it is different than a daily cleanser?

A daily cleanser is meant to remove  make up and oils from the day, provide light exfoliation, and leave your skin feeling clean and fresh. A mask is used less frequently and works deeper to unclog pores, drawing out impurities, and decreasing the appearance of blemishes and wrinkles. With our Cleansing Clay Mask, we recommend using it one to three times a week to prevent breakouts and leave your skin glowing.

Cleansing Clay Mask—Purify and Detoxify

The ingredients we use in our mask are especially picked to help you have the healthiest skin. The clay has a high mineral content that stimulates blood circulation and exfoliates. Vegetable glycerin locks healthy moisture into the skin while helping clear our impurities. Our mask restores your skin with Omega 3,6,7, and 9 in the sea buckthorn oil. Plantain leaves speed up the recovery of damaged skin.

Use this mask by mixing a teaspoon of the mask with ½ teaspoon of water, mixing into a paste in the palm of your hand, and rubbing the paste on your face, neck, chest, or back. Steam from a warm bath while you allow the mask to sit on your skin will only increase the benefits by opening your pores. After five to ten minutes use a warm cloth to remove the mask. You can mist before, during, and after this process with our Hydrating Cucumber Mist as well.

We hope you take a few moments soon to treat yourself with a mask. And for more information about masks or natural skin care in general, contact us today at SkinDeep Naturals.

Product Highlight—Coconut Dream Cleanser and Eye Makeup Remover

Product HighlightsJessica AndersonComment

There is nothing quite like taking off your makeup and washing your face at the end of the day.
A soothing bedtime routine is an important part of proper sleep hygiene and using natural skin
care products in your bedtime routine can be a part of that.

Coconut Dream is a Northern Colorado organic skin care product that is meant to be a part of
your routine at the end of the day. Simply rub a dime-sized amount of the cream between your
palms and massage it on your face and neck. Then wipe it off with a warm, wet cloth to remove
makeup and any impurities from the day. We like these organic cotton cleansing clothes here at
SkinDeep for wiping off the cleanser.

Coconut Dream Cleanser and Eye Makeup remover is perfect for dry or mature skin types, not
necessarily those prone to oily skin. We also recommend following up this cleansing process
with Organic Cucumber Hydrating Mist or Organic Rosewater Mist as a toner. You can rest
assured we make Coconut Dream from organic, raw and unfiltered coconut oil and organic
essential oils for a soothing aroma and restorative qualities.

Removing your makeup at the end of the day prevents your pores from getting clogged by your
makeup and of course waking up with black circles around your eyes from smeared mascara. To
order your Coconut Dream or to learn about any of our other products, contact us at SkinDeep
Naturals today.

How Climate Affects Your Skin

Jessica AndersonComment

As a Northern Colorado skin care business, SkinDeep Naturals knows a thing or two about dry climates. In fact, according to currentresults.com—a website dedicated to communicating weather and science facts—Denver is the third driest major city in the nation, proceeded only by Las Vegas and Phoenix. It is common for people to have dry skin year-round and even more so in the winter. But we also know people use our products in places with more humidity than Colorado which affects their skin too. In this blog post, we will explain a little about how climate affects your skin and what you can do about it.

Dry Climates:

Anyone who has spent any time in a cold, dry climate knows it can cause their skin to crack, get red, flake, and become itchy. How Stuff Works recommends avoiding long, hot showers and applying a daily moisturizer. We like Ginger + Citrus Pure Moisture Body Lotion. They also recommend keeping your skin covered when you are outside and increasing the moisture inside you home by running a humidifier.

Humid Climates:

Humid climates tend to make people sweat more which can lead to breakouts. Using a cleanser and other products made for oily skin can help dry up some of the oil brought on by sweat and humidity. Our Blemish Control Toner and Blemish Control Serum are designed to bring relief to acne-prone skin.

If your local climate is causing trouble to you skin, you are not alone. Check out some of our products and find other ways to help your skin like using a humidifier in dry climates  and protecting your skin from the sun in hot and sunny climates. For more information, contact us today at SkinDeep Naturals.

Product Highlight—Daily Exfoliating Cleanser and Refill

Product HighlightsJessica AndersonComment

If you don’t already enjoy the daily routine of washing your face at night, now is a great time to try it. Along with brushing your teeth and your other bedtime rituals, washing your face is a relaxing way to take the day off. SkinDeep Naturals has a Daily Exfoliating Cleanser that is perfect for removing the dirt from the day as well as makeup and dead skin.

This Northern Colorado skin care product is made from all-natural ingredients like organic rice flour, sugar, organic olive oil, and organic essential oils. It also contains jojoba oil and vitamin e to rejuvenate your skin. Unlike some scrubs on the market, this sugar scrub is gentle enough for everyday use but still smooths out the appearance of wrinkles and lines.

Something remarkable about our cleanser that shows our attention to the environment is that we sell refills in disposable packages that lessen your environmental impact as you reuse your existing glass jar. We recommend running the jar through the dishwasher and then letting it dry all the way. Then with some rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball, wipe out the inside of the jar and let it air dry. This ensures the jar is sterilized and you can add your refill from the pouch. This refill process saves you a few dollars and allows you to reuse!

Our Daily Exfoliating Cleanser is best followed by our Organic Cucumber Hydrating Mist and Facial Serum. For more information about our natural skin care products, contact us today at SkinDeep Naturals.

Organic Skin Care, Health & WellnessJessica AndersonComment

At SkinDeep Naturals, we sell our products locally in Northern Colorado and on the web. Another way we are excited about distributing our products is through interested retailers. Did you know SkinDeep Naturals offers wholesale to companies who want to carry it?

Wholesale natural skin care is a great way for you to introduce your customers to the products you already love. If you are interested in carrying some of our products in your store, just fill out this web form answering a few questions about your business and we would love to chat. But what are some of the benefits to carrying SkinDeep Naturals in your store?

Products You Trust:

Buying from SkinDeep, you know the products are small batch and made using natural ingredients. Your customers aren’t receiving any harmful chemicals and get the benefits of products made with bee products, essential oils, and other natural components.

Support a Small Business:

Chances are, if you are considering a wholesale account with SkinDeep Naturals products, you also run a small business. As small business owners, we like to stick together and support one another. Your clients can go to a big box store if they are looking for something ordinary. They come to you if they want a product and experience that is unique and high-quality.

Providing your customers with natural skin care is the perfect way to boost their skin care regimen with products you trust and support another local business. 3 Home-Made Mask Recipes to Pamper Yourself

Organic Skin CareJessica AndersonComment

You don’t have to go to a spa to do a little pampering. Plan a spa night at home with some good friends and make a few of these home-made facial masks. All you will need are a few ingredients that you probably already have on hand and maybe a bottle of wine and some healthy snacks!

Kefir is one of my favorite DIY facial ingredients due to its beneficial bacteria and naturally occurring Alpha-Hydroxy Acid. AHA’s are great for your skin because they rid the skin of dead surface cells and stimulate the production of collagen. If you aren’t already making your own kefir at home, you should consider it. It is very simple to do and only takes minutes a day. Use what you need for your daily probiotic intake, and save the rest for your skin care routine! You can find more information on how to get started making your own kefir here.

For Normal Skin:

Blend together 1/2 banana, 2 TBS of kefir, and 1 TBS of honey. Apply to the face, neck, and chest area and let set for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water and a cloth. Bananas are incredibly nourishing for your skin and honey works as a natural humectant. No need to moisturize after this treatment, your skin will be incredibly soft and hydrated!

For Oily/Acne Skin:

Whip together 2 TBS of kefir, 1 egg white, and 1 tsp of lemon juice. Apply evenly to the face, neck, chest, and/or back area and let set for 5-20 minutes. Rinse with warm water and a cloth. Follow with 1 pump of Blemish Control Serum combined with 2 pumps of Organic Cucumber Hydrating Mist or Blemish Control Toner. Repeat this mask every 2-3 days to clear up acne breakouts.

For Dry Skin:

Combine 1/2 ripe avocado, 1 TBS of kefir, and 1 TBS of honey until blended well. Apply to the face, neck, and chest. Make sure you massage it in very well. Let it set for 20 minutes and then rinse with warm water and a cloth. Follow up with a few mists of Organic Rosewater Hydrating Mist. Use the other half of your avocado for a delicious serving of avocado toast!

We hope you love these recipes and have a little rest and relaxation time as you try them out. Contact us today at SkinDeep Naturals for more natural skin care solutions.

Why Shopping Local Matters

Organic Skin CareJessica AndersonComment

As you know, SkinDeep Naturals is a small business. We make our products to order, creating quality small-batch skin care products. We use local products when possible—even bee products from bees kept on our property. We love being an Internet business and getting the products we care about to people all over the country. But we also support and promote shopping local. That’s why we wanted to talk about the importance of shopping local in this week’s blog post.

While the general consumer trend is to find more and more items at big box stores, there has also been a call to support local business rising from various voices. Things like Small Business Saturday (following Black Friday) was started by American Express to promote shopping at small businesses when you do your holiday shopping.

Even Forbes published a recent article on the importance of shopping at small, local businesses. Author Nicole Leinbach-Reyhle points out a number of misconceptions that keep people from shopping at local stores. One thing she reminds readers is that a small business will most likely go out of their way to get you something that is out of stock. A local business wants you to be their customer, so they will often go out of their way to help you. Excellent customer service is a big benefit of shopping locally.

Leinbach-Reyle also points out that local businesses often have a better and more surprising selection than a big box store and they are more likely to give back to your community. Shopping at local businesses keeps money in your local economy and helps the business owner maintain their livelihood. But there are also many benefits to shopping local to you, the consumer, like the Forbes article points out.

At SkinDeep Naturals, we are thankful that the Internet allows us sell our products far and wide. But our local customers have a special place in our hearts. For more information on our small-batch, locally made products, contact us at SkinDeep Naturals today.

How This Online Retailer Strives to Stay Green

Organic Skin CareJessica AndersonComment

At SkinDeep Naturals, we are a Northern Colorado skin care line that focuses on all natural products, using ingredients from the earth, and sustainability. But when it comes to being a mostly online retailer packaging and shipping most of our orders, that can cause some problems for a company wanting to make as small of an environmental footprint as possible. So, we have worked to come up with creative solutions to make sure we remain true to our values.

First, we use packaging peanuts made from corn starch which means they are 100% water soluble.  Unlike traditional packing peanuts that sit in landfills or float around in the ocean for many years, our non-toxic packing peanuts can go straight into your compost pile or dissolve in the sink. And another bonus—they do not have an electrostatic charge like traditional packing peanuts do, making them a lot less of a hassle when unpacking your items.

The next step we take in our conscious packaging is to use newspaper end rolls from the local newspaper office. Newspapers are printed on enormous rolls, but there can be thousands of square feet of blank newspaper left on a roll after printing is done. We buy these leftovers for just a few dollars for our shipping needs. (Attention parents—these rolls are also perfect for art projects for kids!)

Lastly, we work with another local Northern Colorado business EcoEnclose to get our poly mailers for shipping. All their products are either biodegradable, recycled, recyclable or reusable.  Also, these poly mailers have 2 tear-tabs so that they can be sealed for 2 uses!

Hopefully you can see we strive to be intentional about each step in our process of creating natural skin care products that will help your skin and body. For more information about SkinDeep Naturals, contact us today.

Why Fresh Skin Care Products Are Better Than Those Sitting on a Shelf

Organic Skin CareJessica AndersonComment

Do you find it a little disconcerting to read the labels of your food and see they don’t expire for months or years to come? Or you have probably seen the horrifying photos that circulated the Internet a few years ago of a McDonald’s cheeseburger and fries that were left out for 10 years unrefrigerated and basically looked as good as new a decade later. You would never accept eating a meal that had sat on a shelf for years, so why is it different with skin care products?

While you don’t ingest your skin care products, there are several compelling reasons as to why fresh skin care products are better. Skin care products weren’t meant to sit on a shelf in a warehouse for long periods of time, waiting to make their way to your local drug store or beauty store when you pick them up.

Products that last that long are full or preservatives and artificial ingredients that create that longevity. When you buy products from SkinDeep Naturals, you are buying products with fresh and active ingredients, without weird preservatives. They have a shorter shelf life, because like your food, they are best when they are fresh. Our products are small-batch and made to order. Can you say that about the last skin care line you bought at Macy’s or Ulta?

For more information on our process and the benefits of fresh skin care products, contact us today at SkinDeep Naturals.
