What You Need to Know About Skin Types

Just like every person is unique, everyone has unique skin. People have different sensitivities, water content, and lipid or oil content in their skin. These factors affect which products you should use on your skin and different elements to add to your skin care regimen. It’s also important to note that skin type can change over time - so listen to your body and change your skin care regimen as needed. These are the 5 main skin types and a few tips for caring for them, according to WebMD.

Normal: Normal skin doesn’t have any sensitivities and very few blemishes. This is a result of the right balance of lipids and water. An important note here is that normal skin doesn't mean "do nothing" skin. The more preventative approach you take at this stage, the better off your skin's health will be in the long run. A regular 3-step cleansing system and use of sunscreen when spending time in the sun are key. Prevent sun damage, prevent dehydration, and prevent clogged pores so that your skin ages well.

Dry: Dry skin has less elasticity, more visible lines, red patches, and a dull complexion. Ways to help dry skin are avoiding long, hot showers, avoiding harsh soaps and cosmetics, and using a rich moisturizer right after bathing, while skin is still damp. This combination of water and lipids mimics and nourishes the skin's acid mantle barrier. Check out our Rosewater Hydrating Mist and Total Nourish Facial Serum for dry skin.

Oily: Oily skin is common during adolescence and is characterized by an oily complexion, visible pores, and black heads. Treat oily skin by limiting washing the face to two times a day and using products labeled for oily skin. Avoid aggressive popping and squeezing blemishes since that can lead to scaring. Instead, try giving yourself an at-home skin care treatment so that pores can be properly extracted.

Combination: Combination skin is just as it sounds, perhaps dry or normal in places and oily in others, especially along the t-zone. If you have questions about which products are right for your combination skin, please contact us.

Sensitive: Sensitive skin is characterized by redness, itching, or dryness. Natural skin care products are a great choice for sensitive skin because there aren’t any chemicals or unnatural fragrances or coloring to aggravate skin.
