If you’ve been following our blog, you know we are proud to use bee products from our very own bees in our handmade skin care line. The bees are kept on our property and we enjoy using some of their excess products to help your skin stay moisturized and healthy. Last time we talked about using beeswax as an emulsifier in many of our products.
But beeswax isn’t the only bee product we use at SkinDeep Naturals. We also use a bee product called propolis. Propolis is made by bees from resins they collect from plants and trees while foraging. They bring these resins back to the hive and use them to create propolis. Then they use the propolis to seal up any cracks or crevices in the hive, protecting the hive from the elements (rain and wind). Sealing these cracks also keeps any unwanted creatures from entering. The propolis is antimicrobial—so not only is it filling in cracks—but it's keeping the air clean!
Humans have been harvesting propolis for thousands of years as a remedy for many compromised or inflammatory skin conditions such as minor burns, eczema, rosacea, acne, wrinkles, and sun damage. Following in the footsteps of these ancient precedents, we harvest propolis from the hive throughout the summer when we inspect the hives. We only take any excess propolis so as not to rob the bees of their hard-earned supply.
